TaekwondoTaekwondo is a Korean martial art and this modern term translates as "Way of the foot and fist". The roots of the art go back 1400 years to a warrior class known as the Hwa-rangdo who developed a fighting system to prepare for battle. There are two major systems: the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). The WTF was been approved as an Olympic sport where the competitors practise full contact techniques while the ITF is more commonly known for point fighting. The ITF was unified under General Choi, but since his death it has split into several factions. Not all Taekwondo schools belong to either of the major federations, but the way that they train can usually be defined as either a WTF or an ITF system.
